How to Sew a Security Blanket
Roughly 60% of children between the ages of one-and-a-half and five are attached to a blanket or stuffed animal, according to the journal 'Child Psychiatry and Human Development.' If you want to sew a security blanket for the child in your life, it is not that difficult to make.

Making the Blanket
-
1
Lay your two pieces of fabric together, lining up the edges.
-
2
Pin around the edges every few inches, making sure to keep the edges lined up.
-
-
3
Start in one corner and sew around the edges of the fabric. Stop sewing roughly 8 inches away from the corner where you started, leaving a gap between the pieces of fabric.
-
4
Turn the blanket right-side-out by pulling the fabric through the open gap.
-
5
Iron the blanket, making it smooth.
-
6
Fold the edges of the gap into the middle of the blanket and iron it down, creating a crease. Pin it closed.
-
7
Select a zig-zag stitch on your machine and sew around the outside of the blanket, making sure to catch the edges of the gap to close it up. This zig-zag pattern adds a decorative touch for your blanket.

Tips & Warnings
Use cotton or flannel for both sides of the blanket, chenille is not necessary.
Use the same fabric for the front and back, or choose two complementary colors.
If you want the two sides of the blanket to be connected in the middle, but not quilted, sew a few stitches or ribbons in the middle of the blanket.
Babies love playing with tags or satiny ribbons on blankets. Create your own tags by sewing a few short pieces (no longer than 3-inches long) of ribbon onto the blanket. You can put them in the middle of the blanket, like with the stitches, or incorporate them in the side seams. Use complementary colors to make the ribbons stand out and make the blanket unique.
