Open the device manager to determine if your computer has a working wireless network card. Go to the "Start" menu in the lower-left corner of your desktop, then go to the control panel and open the device manager. Your computer's network cards will be listed under "network adapters," so double-check to make sure your PC is equipped with a wireless card before proceeding.

Look on the side of your computer (if it is a laptop) to see if it has a switch enabling or disabling the wireless card. Many laptops have a horizontal switch located on the side or rear of the machine, so be sure it is toggled to the on position before connecting to a wireless network.

Detect available networks by going to the "Start" menu, then the control panel, then the "network center" or "network setup wizard." Select "Connect to network." At this point, your computer will detect all wireless networks within range.
