How to Restore the Operating System in Vista

Windows Vista is an easy-to-use operating system. However, there may come a time when your computer is not functioning as well as it once was, due to a virus or a bug in the system. If you have tried virus removal and spyware cleaners, but nothing has helped, try using Window's Vista System Restore. It is a very simple procedure that takes your Window's Vista back to a time when your computer was functioning properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Close all open windows on your computer, including web browsers and offline programs.

    • 2

Go to "Start" on your desktop, and click on it. When the start menu opens, select "All Programs."

    • 3

Find "Accessories" in the programs list, and open it. From the accessories drop-down menu, go down and select "System Tools." From the "System Tools" menu, choose and click on "System Restore." If you are prompted for an administrator password, enter it now.

    • 4

Read the options in the system restore menu when it opens up, and select the option to restore your computer to an earlier date, and then "Next."

    • 5

Choose a date from the calendar that will appear on your screen. The available system restore dates are highlighted in bold print. Be sure to go back to a date in which you know your Windows Vista was functioning properly. Click on the date, and then click "Next."

    • 6

Confirm that you want to restore windows to that date, and then click "Next" again. At this point your Windows Vista begins its restoration process, which will take a few minutes. Your computer will shut itself down and reboot, at which point you will see a screen that says the system restore was successfully completed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save any programs or documents that were added to your computer since the date you selected for system restore. They will be erased when you go back to the restore point.

  • Never turn the computer on, off or open any new windows while system restore is performing the restore process, as this can cause it to not work correctly.
