How to Install a USB Keyboard to a Laptop

Even though your laptop computer has a keyboard built-in, you still have the option of attaching another USB keyboard. You may require this for productivity reasons, or it may simply be more comfortable for you to use an external keyboard with your laptop. For whatever reason you actually want to do it, this process is similar to the steps you would take to attach a USB keyboard to a desktop computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an open USB port on the case of your laptop computer. On most models, these will be present on either the side or the rear of the laptop's case.

    • 2

Insert the USB keyboard's cord into the available USB port on your laptop computer.

    • 3

      Boot up your computer.

    • 4

Insert the CD that came with your USB keyboard into your laptop's CD or DVD-ROM drive.

    • 5

Install the software contained on the CD that came with your USB keyboard. The software included on this CD is a "driver," which is a computer program that allows your operating system to recognize and use your newly attached hardware. Once this is done, you can begin to use your USB keyboard with your laptop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many USB keyboard are plug-and-play and do not require any installation of drivers at all. Your computer will recognize the keyboard a few seconds after it has been plugged in, and you will be able to use it immediately.
