How to Fix Jump Drives

A jump drive is a portable memory device you plug into your computer via USB port. These devices can vary in size, from a few hundred megabytes to several gigabytes. However, the device can run into issues and not function properly. One of the most common issues is clearing out all of the data but the computer still recognizes the jump drive as full. This can be extremely frustrating but there is a way you can go about fixing this problem.

      Connect the the jump drive to an available USB port on the computer. In a moment the computer is going to state it has detected a new removable storage device.

      Open "My Computer" ("Computer" in later versions of Windows) and right-click the removable disk icon. This is going to bring up a pull-down menu.

      Select "Properties" from the pull down menu. This loads a small window. From the window click on the "Tools" tab, then select "Check Now" under "Error Checking."

      Check off the box "Automatically fix file system errors" and click "Start." The computer is now going to scan and fix any issues it finds with the jump drive.

      Click "OK" when informed of the scan being complete. Then drive should work properly again.
