How to Build a Home With Wind Power Systems

There are two main uses of wind energy to power a home. Wind mills have long been used to power water pumps on farms, and easily can be built in the back yard of a home with well water. The other use involves connecting the wind mill to an alternator to produce electricity. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Steel bladed windmill
  • 90 degree gearbox
  • Driveshaft
  • Alternator
  • Mounting brackets
  • 120V Voltage regulator

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the windmill in a windy area. The blades should be placed in a high, unobstructed place to get the best performance.

    • 2

Attach the center shaft of the wind mill's fan to the gearbox. The output of the gearbox should be pointed towards the ground.

    • 3

Connect the drive-shaft to the gearbox. The other end of the drive-shaft will be connected to the alternator. This will place the alternator at ground level where it is easily accessible and it reduces the weight at the top of the windmill.

    • 4

If a car alternator is used, the current bridge should be removed to create AC current. The voltage regulator is connected to the electric outputs of the alternator. This will create 120V output from the windmill that can be used in the home.

Tips & Warnings

  • A homemade wind mill can be dangerous. Only properly trained individuals should undertake such a task. The electric output from the wind mill can damage electronics and other electrical devices in the home. Attaching an alternative supply of electricity to one's home is against building codes and electrical company policies in some areas. Check with the appropriate local organizations.
