How to Administer an Adult GED Program

Administering a successful GED program can be very rewarding, but also very challenging. Locating students for the program and keeping them on track can be difficult as many will have life demands that can get in the way of their goals. Funding is also a problem because funds for adult education are not plentiful and are the first to get cut when money becomes tight. If the administrator, however, can endure in this environment, he/she will take pride in seeing that every year brings graduates --- adults who have succeeded in pursuing their goal of obtaining a GED.

  1. Putting the Program Together

    • 1

Recruit students. Although there are many adults in your area that may need their GED, it is a challenge to find them and get them to sign up for GED classes. Word of mouth is the best way to obtain needed students, but flyers in local establishments, notices in newspapers, and mentoring programs are also good ways to locate them.

    • 2

Assess the students. The locator and TABE tests are testing tools that help determine student levels in each of the core academic areas, also revealing whether they are ready to begin preparation for the GED or if they need to work on basic skills first.

    • 3

Give the official GED practice test. After students have attended classes for preparation, a GED practice test should be given to evaluate how well they are prepared for the official GED test. If required scores are not met, the students should return to class and continue preparation for the actual GED test.

    • 4

Follow through. Check student attendance. Talk to teachers regarding student progress. Keep checking on students' progress and at some point, test them again during their prep before they take the GED test.

    • 5

Help students complete the test registration form when it is time for them to take the GED test. This process must be accurately completed if they are to be assured of testing placement at the testing center.

Tips & Warnings

  • GED administrators must know their funding and work closely with the school district regarding this funding. They should also work closely with the state's Director of Adult Education to stay current on mandates and to track the scores of those tested.
