How to Bleach Wigs

Lace wigs are the only wigs that can be successfully bleached because of the damage that bleach can cause to the plastic caps and synthetic fibers that make up synthetic and human-hair wigs. Women who wear lace wigs must bleach them before the wigs are knotted. The bleach should be mixed at a strength which will make the wig just a little lighter than the its original color, creating a natural-looking headpiece.

Things You'll Need

• Foam head (to hold the wig)
• Bleach powder
• Mixing tub
• Developer
• Stirrer
• Brush
• Gloves

Instructions

1. Place the lace wig on the foam head and put on gloves.

2. Mix approximately 2 tbsp. of the bleach powder and 2 tbsp. of the developer. Mix well with the stirrer.

3. Test a little of the bleach solution on a small area of the hair where it will not be seen, perhaps underneath in the back. Make sure that it does not damage the hair.

4. Spread the mixture throughout the hairpiece evenly. Spread it in a downward motion in the direction that the hair falls.

5. Wait for the hair to become the desired color.

6. Shampoo, condition and seal the knots as usual.
