How to Identify an Intel Chipset
Intel chip sets are used by many, but not all, computer manufacturers. There are many different Intel chip sets available to computer manufacturers and all can be identified using the Windows operating system. Although it is possible to identify chip sets by opening the computer system case and examining the motherboard, it is recommended that only trained professionals open a computer system case.

Identify Your Chipset

Open the Device Manager for your operating system. The easiest way to accomplish this is to right click on the My Computer icon and choose "Manage" from the pop-up menu.

In the main window pane, find the entry for System Devices and click on the corresponding + sign; this will expand the view for the system devices.

Scroll down until you see an entry similar to the following: "Intel GL960 Express Chipset." In this example, the chip set is the Intel GL960 Express Chipset.

Tips & Warnings
Opening the computer system case is not a recommended procedure for identifying the chip set for a computer. If you should choose this method, be certain that the power is turned off and the system is not plugged in to a power source. In addition, it is also not recommended to ever remove the heat sink from a chip set.
