  1. How to Make a Faux Fur Shrug

    • 1

Find a pattern. You may or may not choose to use a sewing pattern to create a faux fur shrug. If you have a very simple design in mind, this may not be necessary. Many online sites like Berroco offer free shrug patterns, which can also be purchased in fabric stores or found in sewing magazines.

    • 2

Buy the faux fur. Fabric stores, whether online or brick-and-mortar, offer wide variety of faux fur for your shrug project. Shop around at sites like Joann's and Hancock Fabrics to find quality, affordable fake fur. To make a shrug, you'll want to purchase around 2 yards of material. Forty-eight inches wide would be ideal, but if this size is unavailable, purchase faux fur in a 30-inch width instead.

    • 3

Follow the sewing pattern to create the fur faux shrug, or wing it to make a simple design. You will start by cutting a length of fur fabric to the size you desire (remember to double-check the measurements at least twice before applying scissors). If it's wide enough, simply fold the fabric in half. If the material isn't as wide, cut off two equal lengths of faux fur.

    • 4

Test the size of the shrug by wearing the cut fabric in front of a mirror. Make sure the material is of the right size and length before making more permanent changes to the faux fur.

    • 5

Apply fabric glue to the backside of the faux fur (this will be a flat, rough material that's somewhat tough) to secure the folded edges of the shrug. If you're using two lengths of fur, simply match them evenly and seal them together with the fabric glue. This glue is used in lieu of sewing and works especially well for faux fur. A standard needle and thread can still be applied to sew edges together, but this method takes longer. To create some styles, it may be necessary to stitch the two ends of the faux fur shrug together. For other styles, the ends will be left free.
