How to Make Pop-Up Paper Placemats

A paper placemat made out of scrapbooking paper can be a colorful and beautiful placement all by itself. Most standard scrapbooking paper is 12 inches square. This 12-inch square of colorful and sturdy paper can make a beautiful placemat that will stand out from the typical. Make the paper placemat even more special by creating a pop-up name card in an upper corner that will ensure guests know the seating arrangement.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the shape you will cut into the scrapbooking paper to create the pop-up name card. Suggestions include squares, rectangles, diamonds, triangles, circles, hearts or any geometric shape.

    • 2

Draw the base of the pop-up shape approximately 1 inch from the top edge of the scrapbooking paper. Position the shape either at the top left or top right corner of the scrapbooking paper. The base of a square, rectangle or triangle would be a simple horizontal line (approximately 2 inches long). The base of a diamond, circle or heart would be a short horizontal line (approximately ¾-inch long).

    • 3

Continue drawing the remainder of the pop-up shape by drawing it upside-down from the line drawn in step two. Make a square with 2-inch sides. Make a rectangle with 3-inch long sides. Make a triangle with 3-inch long diagonal edges angling down to a point beneath the horizontal line. Make a diamond, circle or heart by drawing the shape upside-down using the first horizontal line as the base of the shape.

    • 4

Use the craft knife to cut the lines you drew in step three. Position the straight edge along straight lines and cut carefully along your pencil drawings. Cut curved or other geometric lines carefully with the craft knife by free hand. Do not cut the horizontal line you drew in step two.

    • 5

Fold the shape up so it stands straight and protrudes from the horizontal line you made in step two. Crease the fold so the shape stands straight.

    • 6

Write a guest name on the pop-up name card with the gel pen.
