In this folder, you will see icons for all of the applications that are currently installed on your computer. Some of them might be in another folder within the applications folder, but everything should be named according to the application.

If you would like to add one of these applications to your dock, simply click and drag the icon from the applications folder directly into your dock at the bottom of the screen. That way, if you want to open that application in the future, you won't have to go digging around in the applications folder looking for it.
