Testing for Mold in the Air

Buy a mold testing kit from a home supply store that tests for mold on surfaces.

Stick the pieces of tape that come with the kit sticky side down on four different surface areas inside of the air vent.

Pull the pieces of tape up and fold each piece over, sticky side against sticky side, so that any possible mold gets trapped in the clear tape.

Place each piece of tape in its own plastic bag.

Send the bags to the testing lab listed on the package, or to one of the mold testing labs listed in the Resource below.
Testing for Mold on the Surfaces

Buy a mold testing kit from a home supply store that tests for mold in the air.

Push the button on the testing device and place it in the air vent for the amount of time directed on the package.

Remove the device from inside of the vent after the directed amount of time and place it in a plastic bag.

Send the bag to the testing lab listed on the package, or to one of the mold testing labs listed in the Resource below.

Tips & Warnings
Hire a professional if you don't feel comfortable testing for mold yourself. This may be the only option in some cases, especially if the air vents you need to test are difficult to get to.
Don't let someone with respiratory problems conducts the tests.
Don't touch anything inside of the air vents without gloves on.
