How to Protect Trees From a Weed Trimmer

Young trees tend to have soft bark that is easily damaged by animals or yard machinery such as weed trimmers. This damage can scar the bark, making it more susceptible to insect attacks and diseases. Protect the bases of young trees using plastic shields that wrap around them. The shields are available in an array of designs, from solid to netted plastic. • Netted plastic
• Wire cutters or sheers
• Metal wire or plastic zip ties

Instructions

1. Unroll a piece of tree trunk wrap. The material will either come in rolls or pre-cut to a specified length.

2. Place the wrap around the tree trunk to size the material. Allow some material overlap so that you can make adjustments as the tree grows.

3. Cut the wrap to the appropriate size using heavy-duty sheers or wire cutters.

4. Using wire cutters or sheers, shorten the height of the wrap to fit.

5. Secure the wrap around the tree trunk. Use metal wire or plastic zip ties to attach the ends of the wrap together.
