How to Remove a Truck Top

Truck beds are great for hauling large objects from one place to another, but sometimes you want extra security to hold the items in place, so you may want to install a top. These are known by different names, including topper, camper shells or just shells. They are excellent for keeping items in the bed dry and secure. Should you decide to take off the camper for one reason or another, this is an easy process, and it can be done with some help from an assistant or two.

Instructions

Open the tailgate and the lid to the shell, then crawl inside the bed and locate the mounting clamps. There are several ways a topper can be secured: c-shaped clamps, traditional bolts, or even a custom clamping system. Whatever the method, they all use bolts.

    • 2

Unbolt the top from the bed using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, setting the clamping devices to the side, in case you need to reuse them later.

    • 3

Set up your assistants so they are evenly positioned around the perimeter of the top. The top is heavy enough that it will require at least two people to lift, although the more assistants you have, the easier the task will be.

Lift the top off of the truck bed using your arms and legs to take the pressure off of your back, then pull it off and away from the bed, being careful not to trip or damage the top in the process. Set it down gently on a safe surface where it will be free from harm.
