How to Install a DVD Burner on a Dell Computer

If your Dell computer came with only a CD or DVD reader, you may want to install a burner instead. Having a DVD burner in place will make it easier to back up your files, share videos with family and friends, and store your favorite programs. Installing a burner in your Dell PC is not difficult, but it is important to follow the proper procedures.

Instructions

Look at the front of your computer to determine if there is a free drive bay where you can install your new burner. Look at the floppy drive, CD drive and other devices that are currently installed, then look underneath those devices for a blank spot on the front of the computer. If you see a blank spot, you can use that space to install your new burner.

Consider installing an external DVD burner on your computer if you do not have enough space in your case or if you do not feel like opening the case to install an internal burner. The advantage of installing an external burner is that it is much easier to connect this type of burner--all you need are a USB cable and a free USB port on your computer. The major disadvantage is that an external burner will be more costly than the internal alternative.

Remove the case if you are installing an internal burner. If your Dell PC is designed to fit flat on the desk, the case-release lever should be on the top of the unit. If you have a tower-type PC, the release lever will be on the side. Pull the case release-lever, slide the cover free and set it aside.

Locate the empty drive bay you identified in Step 1 and slide the burner into that drive bay. Locate a large, flat, gray cable inside your computer. One end of this cable will be connected to your computer's hard drive, while the other end will be connected to the motherboard. Look for a white rectangular connection on this cable. If you see that connection, hook it to your burner. If you do not see a free connection, you will need to connect the cable that came with your burner.

Connect the gray cable to your burner and connect the other end to the motherboard, right next to the other gray cable. Connect the small, white power cable to the burner. You will see a small white power cable with four holes that correspond to the prongs on the back of the burner.

Secure the burner in its drive bay with screws so that it does not more around, then turn your computer on and log on.
