How to Convert Rear Disc Brakes on a Mountain Bike

Converting to rear disc brakes will provide a rider with increased more consistent stopping power, especially in wet and dusty conditions. Disc brakes also provide an extra level of safety to riders who enjoy going fast. If you are converting to rear disc brakes, you should strongly consider converting your front brake, too, as they work better in unison.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your old handlebar grips and shifters from the bar. Then slide or mount the disc brake levers onto the handlebar. Re-install the shifters and grips.

    • 2

Mount the front brake caliper to the disc tabs on the front fork. Do the same step for the rear except mount the disc tabs onto the rear seat stays.

    • 3

Route the hydro line along the guides on the top tube. Use zip ties to keep the hydro line secure to the top tube.

    • 4

Mount the disc rotors to the hubs. Use the torque key that came in the brake box.

    • 5

Mount the rotors by following the arrow in the direction the rotors need to rotate. Start tightening the bolts to specs noted in the manufacturer's instructions in a star-like pattern.

    • 6

Put the wheels back on the bike, align the front and rear disc brake caliper with the rotor and tighten the caliper. Once they are aligned you are ready to ride.
