How to Winterize a Weed Trimmer
Weed trimmers are second only to lawn mowers in being a necessity for proper lawn care. During the warm spring and summer months, these tools really get a workout. Since grass is dormant in the winter, weed trimmers don't get much use and are usually put into storage until spring. Before placing a weed trimmer into the shed, there are several tasks that should be performed to winterize it. Taking these steps will ensure that the trimmer is in optimal condition for next spring. Use a clean rag to brush away any grass, dirt and debris that is attached to the weed trimmer. If necessary, use a mild degreasing cleaner to remove oil and grease stains.

Empty the gas tank for gas-powered weed trimmers. The easiest way to do this is to use the trimmer until it runs out of gas.

Change the spark plug on a gas-powered weed trimmer. Changing the spark plug once per year will ensure proper operation.

Change the oil in a gas-powered trimmer. Drain the existing oil by inserting a funnel and turning the trimmer on its side. Replace with the type and amount of oil recommended by the weed trimmer's manufacturer.

Detach the electrical line from electric trimmers and fold neatly for storage.

Store the trimmer in an upright manner by hanging it on a hook or a nail.

Dispose of old oil by taking it to a recycling facility.
