How to Keep Homemade Bread Fresh

Nothing beats a loaf of fresh homemade bread. There is something comforting in knowing that the bread you are eating was hand-crafted from all natural ingredients, and never touched a conveyor belt in a commercial bakery. Instructions

Substitute honey for sugar when baking your bread. Honey is highly hygroscopic, meaning that it can pull moisture from the air. Bread baked with honey will pull in moisture, preventing the loaf from drying out, and thus keeping it fresh longer. Use about 3/4 cups of honey for every 1 cup of sugar called for in your recipe. Reduce the other liquids in your recipe by 1/2 cup to compensate for the honey.

Place the bread in an airtight plastic bag to store it in your refrigerator. Keeping bread in the refrigerator has a tendency to dry it out. If you place bread in an airtight bag in the high humidity drawer of your refrigerator, it will stay fresh and soft for up to a week.

Store bread you don't plan to eat within a week in the freezer. Seal the bread in an airtight plastic bag, and wrap the bag tightly in aluminum foil. This will help prevent freezer burn. Homemade bread stored in the freezer will stay fresh for up to three months.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut your loaf into slices before storing it in the freezer. Take out only as many slices as you will need to keep the rest of the loaf fresh.
