How to Make Rum Flavored Cigars
Flavored cigars have long been a favorite for many people who enjoy cigars. Over the past several years, more traditional flavors used to enhance cigars have been outpaced by fruit flavors, such as grape, peach, strawberry and orange. However, true flavored cigar connoisseurs most often prefer the traditional flavors of rum, whiskey, cognac and honey. Rum is perhaps the frontrunner in flavor, and many seek to create their own custom-flavored cigars at home.
Things You'll Need
- Mild body cigar
- Rum
- Air-tight container
- Glass dish
- Wood blocks (preferably Spanish cedar)

1
Select a mild to mild-medium cigar for the purpose of infusing it with rum. A Dominican blend with a Connecticut shade wrapper is often a good choice. Many manufacturers produce these cigars, ranging in price from around $1 to upwards of $15.
-
2
Choose a rum to be used for infusing. Take into consideration personal preference and price; also consider the price of the cigar. It does not make sense to infuse a high-end cigar with cheap rum.

3
Place a small glass container into the bottom of the air-tight container. On either end of the container, place two blocks of wood that are slightly higher than the top of the glass container. The blocks of wood should be made of Spanish cedar, if possible. The goal is for the blocks to suspend the cigars above the container.

4
Pour rum into the glass container so that it is about three-fourths full. Place the cigars into the box, allowing them to rest above the rum on the wooden blocks.
-
5
Place the lid on the container and allow to sit for several days. Check the cigars to ensure they are not becoming too humid, and then reseal. The infusing process can take several weeks; however, the actual time will depend on the preference of the individual enjoying the cigar in the end.

Tips & Warnings
Closely monitor the moisture level of the cigars as they infuse. If they become too moist, crack the lid of the box to allow moisture to escape. If too dry, add a small humidification device, such as a moisture pillow or humi tube. Both of these devices contain moisture-absorbing crystals and regulate the humidity in a closed environment to around 70 percent. To use, simply submerge the pillow or the tube in distilled water and allow the crystals to absorb the water. Dry the exterior of the pillow and place beside the cigars. Both the pillow and tube will humidify up to 20 cigars for at least 30 days.
Test the cigars throughout the process by lighting and enjoying. This is the only way to determine how long the cigars should infuse. This is especially true for the first time or for a new type of cigar or rum.
Attempt to use Spanish cedar wood, as this is naturally insect resistant and will help prevent the development of cigar beetles, which can easily ruin a box of cigars.
