How to Propagate Root Cuttings

A popular propagating technique is growing new plants from leaf, stem and root cuttings. Houseplants are typically grown from leaf and stem cuttings, while trees and plants with large root systems, such as roses and lilacs, are often propagated through cuttings taken from root stock. Instructions

    • 1

Dig up the soil close to the mother plant and look for actively growing roots or new root growth. They will look fresher and healthier than old and dying or dead roots. Look for large roots, which are more viable.

    • 2

Cut root segments of 3 to 4 inches in length.

    • 3

Prepare a rooting container with fresh garden soil.

    • 4

Lay the root cuttings horizontally on the garden soil. Leave an inch or 2 of space between cuttings.

    • 5

Spread a 1-inch layer of compost over the cuttings.

    • 6

Water the rooting container and keep in a warm and bright place away from direct sunlight. Monitor the rooting container and ensure that the growing medium doesn't dry out.

    • 7

Repot new plants when root cuttings have developed both shoots and new roots.

Tips & Warnings

  • Large roots may be stuck upright into the growing medium. To minimize confusion with the orientation of large roots, harvest them by performing a straight cut on the end closest to the plant (the top end), and a slanted cut on the trailing end. Plant the root cuttings with the trailing end at the bottom of the growing medium and the top end about 2 inches from the surface.

  • If large roots are harvested during the dormant phase of the plant, which is the time the roots have adequate stored carbohydrates, store them in moist soil at 40 degrees for about three weeks. Grow them in garden soil and compost when the weather starts to warm up.

  • Herbs and some perennials may also be propagated from root cuttings.

  • Rooting hormone can be applied to the root cuttings to stimulate growth. Use sparingly to prevent rot.
