Set the times at which you wake up in the morning, leave for work, arrive home again and go to bed each day. This allows the thermostat to adjust the temperature to comfortable levels when you are at home and save money when you are away.

Set the temperatures for each of the four times. According to Energy Star, 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal for when you are at home. If you are comfortable at lower temperatures, decrease the heat. During the winter, set the temperature for when you are going to be asleep or away to eight degrees lower than normal. In the summer, increase the temperature by seven degrees when you are away and four degrees when sleeping.
