Instructions

    • 1

Brew a cup of the blackest coffee you can manage. Once the coffee is brewed, pour it back through the coffee grounds and rebrew. Do this three times.

    • 2

Take four to five black tea bags and add them to the coffee. Bring this mixture to a boil. Let the tea bags continue to steep in the tea and coffee mixture as it cools.

    • 3

Bring one cup of water and one cup of crushed walnut shells to a boil in a separate pot. Add a pinch of salt. Let the mixture boil for 15 minutes and allow the shells to steep as the mixture cools.

    • 4

Mix the cup of tea and coffee with the liquid from the walnut shells (strain out the shells first). This is your brunette hair dye. Add a few drops of essential oil for scent, if you like.

    • 5

Pour the dark brown liquid through your hair 15 times after showering. On the final pour, wring out your hair but don't rinse it. Wrap your head in a shower cap, old towel, or plastic bag, and let the dye do its work for 15 minutes. Then, rinse out with cold water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since natural dyes are gentler than chemicals, you'll need to repeat this process for several weeks before you see a change. Do it every day for the fastest results. Your new brunette hair will be shiny and conditioned!

  • Before rinsing with the dye, clarify your hair with a little baking soda or white vinegar to get rid of any build-up.

  • Walnut shells can stain your hands! Be careful not to spill the liquid on anything valuable.
