How to Wire a Fan Light
All residential ceiling fans on the market today come with a light kit as a part of the ceiling fan or they are pre-wired to accept a light kit at a later time. You can add any light kit you choose to a ceiling fan and you won't even have to take the fan off the ceiling. A light kit can change the way you light your room. So if you have only been able to use lamps in the past, a ceiling light can be a welcome additional to the lighting in your room. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Safety goggles
- Step ladder
- Screw driver
- Ceiling fan light kit
- Orange wire nuts

Turn the power off to the circuit where your ceiling fan is installed by turning off the breaker in the main electrical panel. Put on your safety goggles.

Using the step ladder, remove the light kit cap off of the bottom of the ceiling fan. This is the part of the fan the light kit will attach to; remove it by using the screw driver to remove the screws that hold it to the ceiling fan.

Pop the knock out plug from the bottom of the cap to attach the new light kit to the cap. Follow the manufacturer's directions for attaching the light kit to the light kit cap.

Wire the light kit to the ceiling fan. Connect the black wire from the ceiling fan to the black wire on the light kit by twisting an orange wire nut onto the wires. Connect the white wires from the light kit and ceiling fan in the same manner. Reattach the light kit cap to the ceiling fan.

Remove the canopy from the ceiling hanging bracket to expose the wiring in the ceiling. Locate the wire from the ceiling fan motor that is labeled light kit. If it is not connected to the black wire from the motor and the black wire from the electrical box, remove the wire nut that is holding the two black wires together and attach the light kit wire to the two black wire by twisting the wire nut back onto the three wires. Disregard this step if the wire labeled light kit is already wired together with the other black wires. Reattach the canopy.

Turn the power on to the circuit where your ceiling fan is installed by turning on the breaker in the main electrical panel.

Tips & Warnings
To avoid electrical shock, always make sure the electricity is off for the area in which you are working.
