How to Remove a Truck Utility Bed

Most trucks come equipped with a traditional or stepside bed, but those aren't the only options available. You can also get a utility bed on your truck, which can be customized however you like. Of course, if you decide to go back to a traditional bed, you can do that as well, but you're going to need the help of a few friends to do the heavy lifting on the bed, because it's going to be substantially heavier than a typical truck bed.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • 1/2-inch ratchet, extension and socket set

Instructions

    • 1

Open up all of the storage compartments on the utility bed and empty out anything that might be inside of them. You want to remove all excess weight from the bed.

    • 2

Unscrew the taillights from the bed using the phillips-head screwdriver. Twist out the bulb sockets from the back of the taillights using your hands and push the wiring through the hole in the bed for the taillight, until the wiring touches the ground.

    • 3

Unbolt the gas filler neck from the bottom of the utility bed using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Then crawl underneath the vehicle and unbolt the bed from the frame using the 1/2-inch ratchet, extension and socket.

    • 4

Space your assistants equally around the bed. You want to make sure that each of them has an approximate amount of equal weight. Then lift using your legs to move the utility bed up off of the frame, then pull it back and place it onto the ground.
