Instructions

    • 1

Spray a clean rag with all-purpose cleaner and quickly wipe away the dust and debris on the outside of the vintage sewing machine. Clean the outside of the machine to prevent additional dust entering it as you open up the case.

    • 2

Open up the bobbin case, whether it is a side-load or a drop-in bobbin. Use hemostats or tweezers to remove any dust, lint and threads as you clean a vintage rotary sewing machine. Brush away any excess lint with a small brush. Apply a single drop of oil where indicated by your manual.

    • 3

Swing the side of the vintage sewing machine open or remove the cover panel via screws. Clean the needle assembly with a brush and tweezers. Place a single drop of oil onto the needle assembly, most typically through a small hole in the top of the sewing machine.

    • 4

Unscrew the top panel from the sewing machine to reveal the gears and inner workings. Clean old grease residue off of the gears using a rag dampened with kerosene or a spray lubricant. Wipe away all kerosene residue with a clean rag. Oil each gear with one drop of 3-in-1 or sewing machine oil once it is cleaned.

    • 5

Finish oiling the sewing machine, applying one drop into the oiling holes. Add a single drop of oil to each moving gear on the bottom of the vintage rotary sewing machine.

    • 6

Clean and polish the outside of your rotary sewing machine using a general all-purpose cleaner. Take a small, soft brush to crevices and nooks. Use a bit of mineral oil to polish older black vintage rotary sewing machines to a soft sheen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your vintage rotary sewing machine manufacturer for a manual or oiling diagram.

  • Be sure to check the belt as you clean your machine. In many cases, a new belt will help your vintage rotary sewing machine run well.
