Instructions

    • 1

Cut out the damaged spot of the carpet with a utility knife. Only cut down to the carpet backing, not the carpet padding. Cut out the carpet in a shape that has straight lines. Examples of those shapes are squares and triangles. A shape with straight lines is easier to replace.

    • 2

Place the removed piece of carpet over the carpet sample. Cut out a piece of sample carpet in the same same shape and size as the old piece of carpet. To be on the safe side, you might want the replacement piece to be a tad bit larger than the old piece of carpet.

    • 3

Place the old piece of carpet over a heavy-duty fabric such as burlap. Cut out a piece of burlap that is an inch wider on every side of the old piece of carpet.

    • 4

Push the burlap into the hole of the carpet. Flatten out the burlap under the hole with a kitchen knife or screwdriver.

    • 5

Place carpet glue or two-way carpet tape on the burlap. Use a screwdriver to work the burlap around so that its overlapping edges adhere to the bottom of the carpet. Make sure no glue gets on the top side of the carpet.

    • 6

Place the carpet sample into the hole, and on top of the burlap. Make sure the fibers from the carpet sample run in the same direction as the rest of the carpet.

    • 7

Press firmly down on the carpet sample. Place a book or other weighted object on top of the carpet sample to help it stick to the glue or tape.
