How to Report Rental Payments to Credit Bureau

Since your credit report is a reflection your payment history, make sure it paints an accurate picture. Most major creditors supply information to credit-reporting agencies; however, smaller creditors often do not. Consider a few steps to take to report rental payments and other unreported debt to all three of the major credit-reporting agencies.

First, go online to the official site to obtain your free credit report from the three nationwide credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com. Print all of your reports from the three credit bureaus. This would be a good time to check your reports for errors and identity theft. If you notice inaccuracies, complete dispute forms online.

Contact your landlord to request that your rental payment history be added to each of the three credit-reporting agencies. Provide the landlord with the credit bureau contact information, as well as your payment history and personal information. Any other unreported debts you have can be handled in the same manner.

Contact all three credit bureaus to request that this unreported debt be added to your credit file. Provide copies of substantiating documentation such as your lease agreement and rental receipts, and make sure you keep copies of all correspondence. Never send original documentation or more than what's requested.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding a consumer statement to your credit report is an option to explain or clarify the new account you are reporting. A consumer statement will remain on your credit report until you request its removal, and lenders may take it into consideration when granting credit.

  • Credit bureaus are not required to add verifiable debts to your credit report, and they do so at your expense. Check the policies of all three credit-reporting agencies about adding unreported debts to your credit report.
