How to Hook Up a Digital Converter to a Portable TV
A digital converter box is necessary to receive over-the-air television following the conversion to all-digital broadcasting. This also applies to portable TVs, which are typically equipped with a small mini-plug jack for an external antenna. An adapter for connecting the converter box to this jack with a coaxial cable is available at electronics stores. With these parts in hand, it takes only a few minutes to wire a digital converter box to the portable TV.
Things You'll Need
- 3.5 mm coaxial cable adapter with mini-plug
- 2 coaxial cables with threaded couplers on both ends
- Digital converter box
- External VHF/UHF antenna

Plug the adapter into the external antenna jack on the portable TV.

Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the threaded tip of the adapter, attaching the cable coupler to the adapter by turning clockwise and tightening by hand.

Attach the other end of the coaxial cable to the RF OUT jack on the back of the digital converter box. The coupler fits over the threaded jack and tightens clockwise.

Connect a second coaxial cable to the ANTENNA IN jack on the converter box and attach the other end of the cable to the jack on the external antenna.

Turn on the portable TV and converter box, then adjust the external antenna for best reception.

An external antenna with built-in amplifier can boost the signal for superior picture and sound on the portable TV.
Disconnect the TV and converter box from the power while connecting the coaxial cable.
