How to Repair a Plugged Toilet

Lay some towels around the base of the toilet to protect the floor in case there is flooding or splashing.

Insert the plunger into the bowl and let it fill with water. Then press it hard against the opening inside. Doing this forces water against whatever is plugging your toilet, forcing it further down the trapway. Repeatedly push the plunger down and pull it back up.

Plunge the toilet for several minutes. If it unclogs, you'll notice the flow suddenly rush down the trapway. This means it is safe to flush your toilet. But if the toilet doesn't unclog, you need to use a closet auger.

Insert the cable end of the closet auger into the bowl and slide it deep down the trapway. Push it as far down as you can, twisting the crank end to clear any obstructions. Be careful, because the metal auger can scratch the inside of your toilet bowl.

Flush your toilet once it's unplugged to refill it with water.
