How to Change a Boat Steering Wheel

Other than the deck of a boat, the most important part of any boat is the helm. The helm is the area where the boat is controlled. If this area is not just right, then the person under control can feel uncomfortable and have difficult time controlling the boat. When the gauges are not working, or hard to see, the engine could become damaged. When the steering wheel is damaged, the person controlling the boat could do significant damage to the entire boat and the persons aboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the steering wheel to the center setting. this is where the wheel needs to be when the boat is going straight ahead. This can be done by visually looking at the rudder or out drive to determine straight.

    • 2

Remove the center cap of the old wheel. Some steering wheels will require a large wrench to remove the wheel. Most are attached to the steering shaft with Allen bolts.

    • 3

Loosen the Allen bolts with the proper Allen wrench while holding the wheel in place. When all the bolts are removed, remove the wheel.

    • 4

Place the new wheel on the steering shaft. Make sure the wheel is properly oriented to straight ahead. Reinstall each Allen bolt by hand. This will hold the wheel in place while tightening the wheel.

    • 5

Tighten all of the bolts with the proper Allen key until tight.

Tips & Warnings

  • The steering wheel bolts do not need to be torqued.

  • For wheels with a single nut, a steering wheel puller will be necessary.

  • Make sure to properly align the new wheel with the outdrive.
