How to Replant Rose Bushes

Roses make a lovely addition to any garden and can be grown in a number of ways: on a trellis, in containers or in garden beds. Since these plants are delicate, take extra care when replanting them. Generally, roses can be transplanted in the spring or the fall. People in warmer climates might prefer to wait until fall, while in colder climates, spring is better. Container roses need to be replanted when they grow too large for their container. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you will replant the rose, and prepare the site before you dig up the rose bush. If you're replanting the rose from one container to a larger container, use a new container that is 50 percent larger than the current one.

    • 2

Water the rose for two days before you transplant it. Wait for a cloudy day without much humidity. The rose will be less shocked if you move it on a cloudy day than on a sunny one.

    • 3

Dig a hole that is wide enough to accommodate the rose plant's root ball and is at least 15 inches deep. If you are replanting into a container, fill the bottom third of the container with potting soil.

    • 4

Dig up the rose plant by digging a trench 15 inches deep around the plant, leaving about 6 inches of space around the stem. This allows you to take the rose plant's root ball. Most of the roots will come up, but you may find a few roots still connected. You can cut these with a sharp spade or clippers. If you're replanting the rose from a container, loosen the soil and pull the rose plant up by the stem.

    • 5

Place the plant in the new hole or in the container. Spread the roots out in the soil. Cover the roots with soil. Water the plant thoroughly and allow the water to drain through the roots before filling the container or the hole the rest of the way with soil.

    • 6

Tamp down the soil around the rose bush and add more water. Water the transplant well when the soil dries out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always choose a container with drainage holes if growing container roses.
