This is the fun part of entering your pet pig in a show. Enjoy yourself, and remember to smile.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Feed Bucket Holders
  • Feed Buckets
  • Pig Dusting Powders
  • Pig Feed
  • Pig Wormer
  • Show Stick Or Cane
  • Straws
  • Animal Water Buckets
  • Wood Shavings
  1. Step 1

Make sure your pig is clean and that you're dressed neatly. Check on the dress code for your club or fair barn.

  2. Step 2

Enter the ring when your class is called.

  3. Step 3

Watch the judge at all times.

  4. Step 4

Walk beside your pig with your show stick pointing toward and above the animal.

  5. Step 5

Keep the animal between yourself and the judge, about 10 to 15 feet away from the judge.

  6. Step 6

Remain calm and gently move the animal back where you want it if your pig wanders off.

  7. Step 7

    Be polite to other exhibitors.

  8. Step 8

Shake the judge's hand and say "thank you" when leaving the ring after the show.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never hit the animal with a stick. Tap it gently on its side to herd it in a certain direction, as you practiced at home.
  • Don't let the pig bunch up with a group of pigs - this makes it too hard for the judge to see your animal.

on 9/5/2006 When you are showing, you might not always win, but remember that somebody might be looking up to you, so show good sportsmanship.

on 9/5/2006 When you're in the show ring, make sure to pay attention to the judge and don't get too close to him or he won't have a good profile of the pig.

on 8/8/2006 I have heard that to prevent a pig from fighting in the ring, you should put Vick's VapoRub on the pigs nose before the show, so he can not smell the other pigs and get into a fight.

on 8/8/2006 When showing a pig, use a pipe or whip that is not too short. It should also not be too heavy. I once was showing a gilt and the judge told me I would have won showmanship if my cane were lighter. Always use in the show ring what you have practiced with at home.

on 8/8/2006 If a judge squats down, he is most likely looking at your gilt's underline. Stop your pig by moving in front of it so the judge can look.
