How to Convert Wordpad Documents to .Doc

WordPad is a basic word processor that comes pre-installed on every version of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95. Many Windows users, however, also use Microsoft Word, which is another a word processor produced by Microsoft. Word has many features that WordPad does not. Because all Word users will also have WordPad installed on their computers, it may become necessary to convert files created in WordPad to the .doc format used by Word. Fortunately, this is a simple task.

Instructions

Locate the WordPad file on your computer that you wish to convert to the .doc format. Make a mental note of the file's directory location, or move it to your desktop or some other convenient location.

    • 2

      Launch Microsoft Word.

    • 3

Hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the "O" key at the same time. This will launch a dialog box used to open files.

    • 4

Navigate the dialog box to the location where you saved the WordPad file. Select the file, and click "Open."

    • 5

Hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the "S" key at the same time. This will launch a dialog box used to save files.

    • 6

Type in the desired name for your file and click "Save." This will create a new file on your computer, which is identical to the WordPad file except that it is now in .doc format.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though it is very easy to convert a file from WordPad to .doc format, the reverse is not true. The only way to convert a file from .doc to WordPad is to cut and paste the contents of the .doc file into WordPad and then save the new file. Because Word has many features not shared by WordPad, however, some of the document's formatting may be lost during this process.
