How to Measure a Wall for Curtains
Curtains, also known as drapes, serve a function as well as adding beauty to your decor. You can hang these pieces of fabric over windows to block out the light or a draft, or simply as decoration. A curtain that you hang in a doorway is called a portière. Whatever the reason you want to hang curtains, you need a proper fit. Start by measuring the wall where the curtains will be hung. Decide where you want to hang your curtains. You can measure far above the top of your window to make the window look larger. Use a tape measure and measure the window to make sure it is square. If the window is off just a bit, the whole treatment will look crooked. Once you know the window is square, mark off where the curtain will hang.

Decide how you will mount the curtain rod and curtain. Typically, you should mount curtains directly to the corners of the window frame or on the inside of the frame. You can also mount them three inches beyond the frame and four to six inches above. This will make the window appear larger.

Measure your window according to the mounting method you wish to use. First determine the window's width: That is the first number given for measurements when you order or purchase curtains. Measure across the area of the window but do not include the room for the hardware, only for the width of the curtain rod. Then measure the height of your window so you can decide how short or long your curtains will be.

Place your tape measure in the center of the area where your curtain rod will be hung. Typically, your curtains will come just past the window or all the way to the floor. The shorter length is a more casual curtain and works well for children's rooms or a kitchen. Longer curtains provide a more conservative decoration and can block out more light.
