How to Make Large Carnation Flowers
Making large carnation flowers is a great way to create inexpensive decorations for a garden party or any other event. It also can be a fun craft that will keep kids busy and make them proud of what they have created. Carnation flowers make an excellent craft for springtime, Mother's Day, or any event at which you wish to have whimsical floral decorations. To make paper carnations, you only need a few supplies and a little time.

1
Lay five sheets of tissue paper on top of each other.
-
2
Fold the tissue paper accordion style, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Make each fold 1 inch deep. This will provide you with a thick accordion when you have finished folding.
-
-
3
Wrap one end of the green chenille stem tightly around the center of the folded tissue paper. Be sure the stem is tight and secure, as this will be holding the flower together.
-
4
Take one side of the folded tissue paper, and begin gently pulling the top layer of the accordion back toward the chenille stem center. When you have finished the top layer on one side, repeat the same process with the other side. Continue this step, working one side and then the other, until all of the tissue paper has been brought up to the middle, forming a carnation flower.

5
Trim any edges that stick out in places where they shouldn't.

Tips & Warnings
For a fun variation, use white tissue paper, and after you have folded it, but before you begin pulling it, color the edges only with a colored marker. This will make your carnation resemble the dyed-edge carnations you see in floral shops.
If you want smaller carnations, cut the edges down by an inch or two before you begin pulling the edges back.
Pulling too hard on the tissue paper when you lift it back can cause it to rip and shred, ruining your flower.
