How to Convert to Macromedia Flash

Macromedia Flash (now called Adobe Flash) is a multimedia program offered by Adobe that allows you to create interactive graphics files for the Web. When a file is converted to Flash format (with an SWF "Shockwave Flash" file extension), you can then open and view the file using Macromedia (Adobe) Flash or Flash Player (the latter is commonly installed as a plug-in within your web browser).

Instructions

    • 1

Download PDFZilla (see Resources section) or a similar PDF conversion software program that advertises conversion to Macromedia Flash files (SWF format).

    • 2

Convert your file to PDF format. You can do this by converting it at the "Create Adobe PDF Online" website (see Resources section) or by opening the file in Adobe Acrobat.

    • 3

Open PDFZilla (or your chosen conversion program). Click "PDF to SWF Converter" or the similar option in your program.

    • 4

Add your PDF file or files to the "to-be-converted" list. Choose the output location (file folder on your computer) where you want the new Flash file to be deposited.

    • 5

Choose the pages that you want to convert---you can do just one page or select a range of pages within the PDF document. Each of those pages will separate into its own separate SWF file.

    • 6

Click "Start Converting" or the similar option. The process can take several minutes or longer, depending on how many pages you are trying to convert. When finished, you will have one or a group of Macromedia Flash SWF files in the destination folder that you picked in Step 4. Open your Web browser, and then click on each SWF file to view it.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is useful if you plan to create an online eBook or catalog with flipping pages. Some online "page flip" services will ask you to convert your book pages to SWF format first before they can be displayed in the flipping book (see Resources section for an example of a flip book).

  • If you have links in your PDF file, they will usually transfer in as clickable links in the SWF format.
