How to Design a Contemporary Nursery for Baby

Decorate your baby's nursery using contemporary decor if the rest of your house is modern or if you want the nursery to incorporate a bright color scheme or bold patterns. Choose colors and shapes that make you feel good since your baby will feed off of your feelings. If you walk into her nursery and feel happy and relaxed, chances are she will feel happy and relaxed as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your color palette for the nursery. Paint the walls using one calming color, then add bright and bold patterns to one accent wall. Paint stripes, circles, checks or a combination of stripes and circles. Use a palette of three colors including one neutral base color such as beige or chocolate brown, a secondary color such as white or black and a bright color such as turquoise, lime green or hot pink. Yellow, white and red would work as well.

    • 2

Purchase or refinish nursery furniture to fit in with your theme. Dark wood, black or white are ideal for a contemporary nursery. Arrange the nursery furniture in a way that leaves plenty of open space.

    • 3

Make your baby's crib with bedding that matches or complements the walls. For example, solid pink sheets with a chocolate brown comforter that has pink circles would work with a chocolate brown and pink nursery with circles.

    • 4

Add an area rug in a plain, natural fiber rub or incorporate a bold design in the rug if you don't want to paint the walls in such a manner. Light cream or chocolate brown rugs would work well for a color scheme that incorporates the same shade of brown.

    • 5

Hang three dimensional art or mobiles from the ceiling and walls. Use blocks to spell out the baby's name or personalized baby prints. Hang wall art with texture for when the baby begins to explore his room as he grows.

    • 6

Add accessories to complete the room and provide a space for toys and other items. For example, a small shelf-unit can house colorful baskets for toys, books or clothes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your third color, or the brightest color, to a minimum in the room. Incorporating in sparingly will make it "pop" more.

  • Remove any furniture you don't need or want in the room. Overcrowding the room with furniture or accessories will take away from the contemporary design.
