How to Make Shades of Color
A tint of a color is whatever results when white paint is added to another color of paint. Tints are created by degrees--the more white paint that's added, the lighter the tint. Likewise, a shade of a color is whatever results when black is added. Shades are also created by degrees--the more black paint is added, the darker the shade.

-
5
Rub the black paint on your paintbrush into a section of the big circle of paint on your palette. You are creating a shade of the first paint. Add more black for a darker shade. If you wish to lighten the color, do not add white paint. Instead, add more of the color you started with.

Tips & Warnings
If you add white paint after you've added black to make your shade, the results will be a gray-ish version of the original paint color.
