How to Seal Fish Ponds

How to Seal Fish Ponds thumbnail
A fish pond should be sealed with a pond liner.

Pond liners are essential so the water does not leak out into the surrounding area. Every pond liner is basically installed the same way. The only difference is the edging of the pond, which will vary according to the landscaping you choose. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a durable material to use for your liner and is available in most hardware stores. Once the excavation of the pond has been done, the liner can easily be installed in a day. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Dig the first shelf level, which will be the outer perimeter of the fish pond. If you want another shelf to your pond, dig this out, too. Remember to provide enough width for your plants. Dig the center to the depth you desire.

    • 2

Lay a 4-inch layer of wet sand on the bottom of your excavated pond.

    • 3

Place the underlay liner so that it covers the bottom of the pond and comes up the sides and onto the edges of the pond. Smooth the liner and place heavy rocks around the edges to secure it in place. This is to protect your pond from leaks. Underlays are available at most hardware stores and are made especially for ponds. You can also make your own with a similar PVC plastic material.

    • 4

Fill the pond with water and allow it to sit for a week so everything settles.

    • 5

Add smooth rocks to cover the liner around the edge of the pond, or you can use any kind of edging material. This area is the landscaping around the edge of the pond. It is wise to give it some thought as to how it will fit in with the rest of your landscaping.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the tip of the liner edge points up to prevent siphoning when the water level is high from a rain.

  • It's easier to dig from the center out so you will always have your wheel barrel close by to haul off dirt.

  • Dig a little earth from under the edging rocks so they fit snugly.

  • Be sure the edge of your pond is level all around or the water may drain out.
