How to Lock Firearms Boxes
Firearm boxes are used to store and transport pistols, rifles and shotguns. Boxes come in different sizes to accomodate a variety of guns and are made of wood, plastic or metal. For safety and security reasons, it is often necessary to lock firearm boxes to prevent access to the weapons.

1
Determine the size of the lock to use on the firearm box. A locking hole is typically designed into the box. The hasp, or metal loop of the lock, will fit through the hole to secure the box. If the holes are not a standard size, you must use an appropriate lock with matching diameter hasp.

Consider the environment in which the box will be used. Some locks are designed to be water resistant or water proof for harsh outdoor conditions. Firearm boxes can also have elaborate designs and hardware.

3
Choose either a combination or key lock. Combination locks feature either a set of recessed wheels which operate the lock tumblers, or a face-mounted dial. Key locks operate by inserting a key into the lock and turning it, which activates the tumblers. Many prefer combination locks since keys can be misplaced.
-
4
Insert the open hasp into the box's locking hole. Make sure the lock engages the locking mechanism completely. Pull on the lock to ensure the lock is securely fastened.
-
5
Periodically open and close the lock to ensure the tumblers are working properly. Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or multipurpose lubricant such as WD-40 to insure continued proper operation.

Tips & Warnings
If you plan to transport the firearm box on a commercial airline, check airline or FAA regulations governing specific requirements for locks.
Make sure the lock secures the box and can't be forced open. The lock should open only with the correct combination or a key.
