How to Convert DSS to MP3 or WAV

DSS is the file format used by portable recorders such as those manufactured by Olympus. While DSS files offer perfect integration with the devices that use them, they are not as versatile as MP3 or WAV audio. If you want to use your recorded DSS files in other programs on your computer, or send to others, it may be advantageous to convert them to MP3 or even WAV.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the DSS files on your computer's hard drive. Use Finder or Windows Explorer to navigate to the files. Keep this window open.

    • 2

Download and install Switch Audio Converter. This free software can be used to convert many formats, including DSS, to MP3 audio. Switch Audio Converter can be downloaded from the site in the Resources section below. Follow the instructions on the website to install Switch Audio Converter.

    • 3

Open Switch Audio Converter and drag the DSS files to be converted into the program's "List of Files to Convert" section. In Switch Audio Converter, choose the output directory and encoder options for converted MP3s, or use the program's default settings. When you are ready to convert your files, hit "Convert". Wait for the program to finish creating your MP3 files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that while a high bitrate is best for music MP3 files, you can get away with a much lower rate - and smaller file size - if your DSS files are composed only of recorded speech.

  • MP3 files can be converted to WAV by importing into iTunes and opening iTunes' Preferences menu. In "Importing Options," choose "WAV encoder" and click "OK." Right-click (or command-click) on the MP3 files in iTunes and choose "Create WAV version". A WAV version of your MP3 will be stored in iTunes' "iTunes Music" directory.
