How to Store Caulk Tube

A simple way to save energy in your home comes in a caulk tube. Tubes of caulk seal cracks against air and water seeping in. Caulk's sealing ability poses trouble if you need to store a partially used caulk tube. If not kept properly, the caulk clogs the end of the tube, preventing you from using it in the future. Sealant storage in an unopened state will also determine whether you can use it for future projects. Do not waste your money throwing away used tubes of caulk. Save them for another day and project. Instructions

    • 1

Place all tubes of caulk upright on a shelf for storage in a cool dry place, whether opened or new.

    • 2

Release the pressure on the caulk gun to stop the flow. Wipe off excess caulk from the tip after use with a damp rag.

    • 3

Push a 2-inch nail into the tip of the caulk tube. Choose a nail wide enough to fill the opening without slipping out. Alternatively, place a wire nut over the tip of the caulk tube.

    • 4

Wrap the tip of the caulk tube with plastic food wrap or aluminum foil to seal.

    • 5

Keep the used caulk upright in a cool space away from extremes of humidity and temperature.
