How to change an IP Address

Learn how to change an IP address on your computer. Whether it is for privacy or security reasons, you can change your IP address by releasing and renewing your address through the command prompt.

Instructions

      Open the command prompt.

      Typically you do this by going to the start menu in Windows, then selecting "Run" and then typing in "cmd" and pressing "Okay." In Windows Vista, the command prompt is also located in utility programs.

      Release your IP address.

      To do this, you should type "ipconfig/release" in the command prompt without the quotes.

      Press the Enter key.

      Renew your IP address to get a newly assigned IP address.

      To do this, type "ipconfig/renew" in your command prompt without the quotes.

      Press the Enter key.

      You should now see text dictating your new IP address and other information. Your IP address has now been changed! Repeat these steps as often as you want to change your IP address.
