How to Combine Off-the-Air HDTV With Cable TV

If you own an HD television, you most likely want to receive HDTV programming. However, to upgrade your current cable you need to pay an extra monthly fee (typically around 10 dollars). If you do not want to pay the extra amount but still want some HD channels, you can connect an HDTV antenna to your TV. This allows you to receive off-the-air programming without a monthly charge.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the HDTV receiver with your HD television. A cable is going to run out of the back of the antenna (the HD antenna is usually a flat device placed near the television). An HDMI cable runs from the rear of the antenna and is inserted into an HDMI port on the TV.

    • 2

Connect the component cables into the "Component Out" port on cable receiver. This is a series of three cables that provide the video signal. These cables are far superior than the yellow RCA video cable.

    • 3

Plug the other end of the cables into the "Component In" ports on the TV.

    • 4

Insert the RCA audio cables into the "Audio Out" port of the receiver. These are right next to the Component Out ports.

    • 5

Plug the other end of the RCA cables into the "Audio In" ports next to the Component In ports.

    • 6

Power on the cable receiver and the HD television. Press the "Video" button to bring up the component video information, and press the HDMI button to bring up the antenna content.
