1
Choose the right container for your bamboo plant. Bamboo plants have shallow rhizomes (roots) but can grow very tall, which means the plant needs to be well supported by its pot. Therefore, a narrow but sturdy container that has a flat base is best, such as a long rectangular pot. If your current pot is flimsy, you may need to use a new container.

2
Make sure your bamboo is planted in soil that is rich in nutrients. An organic potting soil is best. The soil should be slightly acidic. If you are unsure, test the soil with a pH soil testing kit. If the soil is alkaline, you may need to re-pot your bamboo plant.

3
Test to see if the soil drains well. Potted bamboo plants should have a layer of pebbles lining the bottom of the container. Water the container and see if there is water in the drainage tray after an hour. If not, the soil is probably holding onto the water, which is not good for the roots of bamboo plants. Remove the plant and dirt, and add a layer of pebbles to the pot before replanting the bamboo.

4
Mist your bamboo plant with water once a day in the mornings. This step is only needed if you have a tropical variety of bamboo, however.
-
5
Water your potted bamboo plant whenever the top layer of soil become dried out. Insert the tip of your finger into the soil to test it occasionally.
-
6
Place your bamboo in a sunny location whenever possible. While the plant can tolerate low-light conditions, it will thrive much better if it gets at least some sunlight each day.
