Instructions

    • 1

Determine what kind of floor you wish to use for your nursery. Choices are usually either soft carpets with lots of cushioning, or a hard wooden floor that can easily be cleaned.

    • 2

Cover all electrical outlets with child safety plastic covers. Just like any other room, nurseries will need a few electrical outlets so that you can plug radios, baby monitors and a number of other appliances into. However these outlets must be kept covered so that young infants aren't tempted to put their fingers or other objects into them.

    • 3

Set up your lighting fixtures so that they are either out of reach of small children or anchored down so they cannot topple over if they are bumped. Hanging lamps and other wall mounted fixtures are great for nurseries. If you have any cords that hang within the infant's reach make sure that you use a child safety power lock to lock the end of the cord into the outlet.

    • 4

Position your crib in a place that is well lit but not directly under a lighting source, including windows. Cribs are a big piece of a nursery; all cribs should be researched at their manufacturer's website to determine if the crib has had any safety recalls or known health concerns.

    • 5

Childproof your cabinets and other furniture. A nursery might contain a small dresser unit for you to store tools and such in. These furnishings need to have edge bumpers on them so that if your infant falls he does not hurt himself on sharp or hard edges. All cabinets and drawers should also have childproof safety locks and the interior door knob will need a childproof safety grip.

    • 6

Set up monitoring devices around the room if you plan on leaving infants in the nursery unmonitored. All nurseries should have a smoke alarm and at least one baby monitor positioned around the crib so that you can hear when the infant has awakened.

Tips & Warnings

  • Nurseries used to always have carpeted floors with lots of cushions; it has been determined that these carpets can cause more harm to infants by trapping dust and other allergens in them and exposing the infant to a number of health risks.
