How to Watch the Disk Defragmenter on Vista

The disk defragmenter is a utility Microsoft provides on Windows-based computers. When you use your computer, you create, delete and move files around--often without even knowing it. When you run the disk defragmenter tool, Windows rearranges these files so that they take up less computer space and your system runs more smoothly. Windows versions prior to Vista allowed users to watch the defrag in process. The Vista operating system does not provide this option, although there is another way to watch the activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the disk defragmenter. Click "Start" and select "Computer" from the right pane of the "Start Menu."

    • 2

Right-click "Local Disk (C:)" and select "Properties." Go to the "Tools" tab and click the "Defragment Now" button. Click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" prompt appears. The Disk Defragmenter will begin.

    • 3

Right-click a blank area of the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and select "Task Manager." Go to the "Performance" tab and click the "Resource Monitor" button at the lower right side of the window. Click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" prompt appears.

    • 4

Click the "Maximize" button at the top right of the "Resource Monitor" window so the window will expand to the full size of your monitor.

    • 5

Click the "Disk" bar to expand and view the "Disk" table. You can watch the process of the disk defragmenter as it runs.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can sort the "Disk" table by its various headings, such as "Image," "File" or "Priority" by clicking the heading name.
