How to Read a Tarot Celtic Cross

The Tarot Celtic Cross is one of the oldest tarot card layouts. It has remained in use so long because of its simple but commanding layout. A circular structure of cards begins to the right, while a masculine tower of cards leads the reader to the outcome. Reading a Tarot Celtic Cross is easy, but best achieved by starting from the beginning, laying each card down after the other in succession.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut or shuffle your cards. Take the card from the top of the deck and lay it face up, vertically. This card represents the "heart of the matter." This is either the main problem that the client is facing, as he sees it, or a pertinent issue in his life.

    • 2

Take the next card from the deck and lay it horizontally on top of the first card. This represents "what's crossing the client." This card is either helping or hindering the issue established by the first card.

    • 3

Place the next card from the top of the deck directly below the small cross that you have in front of you. This card is known as "the root cause." You should interpret this card as a past event or circumstance responsible for the problem or issue your client is experiencing.

    • 4

Take the next card from the deck and lay it directly to the left of the first card that you put down. You should read this card as the "recent past." This card should be a fresh event that could have happened as recently as yesterday that contributed to the client's life.

    • 5

Set the next card directly above the first card. This card represents the most likely outcome if the client does nothing to resolve her issue or makes absolutely no changes in her situation.

    • 6

Place the next available card from the deck directly to the right of your first card. This is the immediate future card. This card signifies events that are going to happen soon, whether the client likes it or not.

    • 7

Assess the cards once horizontally from left to right, and then once more vertically. This assessment, combined with taking the pictures and characters into consideration, should tell you more about the client's overall state and problem.

    • 8

Place the next card from the deck below and to the diagonal right of the last card you laid down. This card represents the client's present state at the reading and his perspective on his problems. This card can have an effect on the ones following it.

    • 9

Lay the next card directly above the last one you put down. This card signifies the client's environment and reveals if it is conducive to solving the client's problem or helping her to achieve what she wants out of life.

    • 10

Take the next card from the deck and lay it directly above the last one. This card represents the hopes and fears of the client. It can also indicate the client's mindset toward his current situation.

    • 11

Place the next card from the deck above the last card that you put down. This card represents the most likely outcome should the client continue on her path. If a negative card arises, then the client's desired outcome most likely isn't meant to be.

Tips & Warnings

  • Traditionally, the position of the first two cards in the Tarot Celtic Cross was known as the "small cross." These two cards are instrumental in laying the foundation for what the client's problem or issue might be; the other cards are needed to provide additional background.

  • Remember that when doing a tarot card reading for someone, you may not end up with a positive outcome. It is important to acknowledge that possibility before beginning the reading.
