Instructions

    • 1

Examine the trunk to determine whether its hinges can be removed. If so, then use a screwdriver or electric drill to remove them. Keep the hinges in a safe place for later reassembly.

    • 2

Using a sponge and soft brush, clean the entire trunk inside and out with a mix of one part mild dish detergent to four parts hot water.

    • 3

Apply painter's tape around non-removable trunk parts. Wrap the tape around the curved parts of the storage trunk so that paint cannot seep onto them. Prior to painting, place a canvas or plastic drop cloth on the floor to protect the trunk from paint splatters or spills.

    • 4

Decide whether the trunk will first need to be primed. Brush on some paint and let it dry. Check to see if the paint has adhered to the trunk. If it has seeped into the trunk, then you will need a primer coat to bond the paint to the trunk.

    • 5

Apply the spray primer to the entire storage trunk, if necessary. Use a sweeping motion left to right to avoid runs and to ensure that the trunk is evenly coated. Before painting the trunk, let the primer dry for the amount of time stated on the can.

    • 6

Apply the initial coat of paint to the trunk. If you are using spray paint, then carefully follow the directions on the spray can for the best results. If you are using a can of paint, make sure to stir well before pouring into the paint tray.

    • 7

Use the paintbrush to cut in the corners and hard-to-reach spaces, painting from the inner area to the outside of the trunk. Paint the flat spaces using a roller. Let the storage trunk dry thoroughly according to the instructions on the paint can. Apply a second coat of paint as needed.

    • 8

Consider varnishing your trunk to provide protection from water damage, scratching or peeling. Apply the varnish with a clean brush according to the directions on the can. Varnish should dry at least 24 hours before replacing the hinges and adding items to the trunk.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the room in which you are painting the trunk well ventilated.

  • Wear a mask to protect yourself from dust and fumes.
